Your Next Read is a reverse book club where you meet to discuss books under a common thread/topic that you would recommend to other readers. The goal of the group is to create a relaxed atmosphere where reading a book beforehand is not required. Instead, you will leave with several new books to add to your TBR pile.

August’s Theme: Please bring book recommendations for your best Leo read - that is, a book with a character who takes center stage (good or bad), and becomes absolutely unforgettable.

Join our quarterly Better Than the Movies book club and discuss upcoming and current films based off of popular literary works. Each meeting we’ll tackle a different book that is making the jump to the big screen to see how the two stories compare through a thoughtful discussion.

Join Blythe Books for our newest Beginner’s Embroidery Class at the store. We’ll be taking time to learn the basics of embroidery stitching, from picking your needle and string thickness to basic stitches that will get you through just about any basic embroidery project. Once we’ve mastered the first steps, we’ll start on our first project: An embroidered canvas bag, perfect for hauling around your favorite books, snacks, or embroidery items.

Make sure you grab a spot for this class, as space is limited! We keep the class size small intentionally so that you have as much hands on experience as needed to feel comfortable with your embroidery.

Spinning Yarns is our quarterly fiber meetup for anyone looking to gather in a social setting to work on their next project.

The event is free to attend, though an RSVP is required to make sure we have enough space for everyone.

Tea and coffee will be available. You are welcome to bring your own snacks and drinks along with your current WIP.

Fiber projects include (but are not limited to) crochet, knitting, needlepoint, embroidery, sewing, needlepunch, etc.

Join Pittsburgh area bookstores The Shelf Love Society and Blythe Books as well as local authors Ann C. Orlandi and [redacted] as we meet to discuss choices authors can make today that will allow them to sell their books successfully to independent bookstores and at in-person con events.

The Shelf Love Society and Blythe Books are two Pittsburgh-based bookstores who stock large amounts of independent authors. They will take you through the ins and outs of how to pitch your book to a store, what you can expect from a business partnership with a location, and how you can improve what you’re offering to these establishments.

Ann C. Orlandi has experience in small and large press traditional publishing, and independent publishing. She will assist participants in how to present their book in the best possible light to make it appealing to potential readers.

This class is offered both online and in-person at The Shelf Love Society. Anyone who attends the in-person class will be able to talk to both bookstores after the event to talk about a potential collaboration with the store.

If booking the online option, a meeting link will be sent to you prior to the start of the event.

Any puzzles that are not claimed at the end of the night will either a). Stay at Blythe Books for our children’s area to use or b). Be donated to a local library or group in need of a puzzle refresher

June’s Swap Theme: Puzzles

Please keep in mind the following about any items you want to swap:

1. Blythe Books is not a dumping ground for stuff you are unable or unwilling to throw away. These events will continue on a semi-regular basis as long as they are not confused for a garbage dump site.

2. Puzzles of all ages and skill levels are encouraged.

3. To the best of your ability, we ask that you double check all puzzles are complete before swapping them. Don’t do the 5,000 piece puzzle again to confirm (unless you want to). Please count children’s puzzles before swapping

4. Other puzzle items are welcome at the swap too (mats, bins, etc)

5. You can bring as much as you want to swap at the event, and leave with as much as you’d like.

Junk Journaling is a great way to take everyday items from your life that you might normally discard and turn them into a unique piece of art that brings about memories and releases your creative spirit.
